Is an OBGYN Only for Women?
Many assume an OBGYN is a medical professional who can only treat the female gender. When a woman is experiencing any health issues related to her reproductive system, she can make an appointment with a gynecologist. When a man is experiencing any health issues related to his reproductive system, he typically makes an appointment with a urologist. However, times are changing, as now men can make an appointment with a gynecologist, too.
OBGYNs treating men
When can an OBGYN treat man, when this type of medical professional is focused on treating women’s health issues? Men used to be able to make an appointment with one of these doctors, until a professional group of people who certify OBGYNs said they were no longer able to treat men, too. This decision was then reversed, allowing OBGYNs to once again treat men. However, now an OBGYN can only treat men for sexually transmitted infections and to perform important anal cancer screenings.
A urologist for men is sometimes seen as the equivalent of an OBGYN for women. This type of doctor has undergone education and training in order to treat any issues and diseases related to a man’s reproductive system. A urologist can also treat women, with one of the common types of treatments women need to be seen for is urinary tract problems. A urologist is often a recommended doctor when a man or a woman is experiencing health problems related to the bladder, kidneys, urethra, uterus, testes, penis, prostate and scrotum.
The importance of treating sexually transmitted infections
When a man is concerned that he has a sexually transmitted infection, it is important that he seek treatment right away. Otherwise, the infection can continue to cause damage to the body as well as be spread to others. These are some of the more common such infections:
- Genital herpes
- Genital warts
Treatment often includes taking antibiotics, though some sexually transmitted infections are not curable.
The importance of undergoing an anal cancer screening
The American Cancer Society recommends that men receive an annual rectal exam after the age of 50. Men who are considered to be a high risk of getting anal cancer should be tested more frequently. If any signs are found, treatment is dependent on the type and stage of the cancer. Common treatment options include radiation therapy, chemotherapy and surgery.
Do you need to make an appointment today?
Whether a patient is a woman or a man, a regular OBGYN appointment can be an important part of health care to ensure continued good health. When making an appointment, it is important to explain health concerns clearly to be sure to see the right kind of doctor. Men may see an OBGYN for assistance with STDs and anal cancer screening, while women may go for help with these as well as for fertility issues, menstruation problems and other things related to sexual and reproductive health.
