Reasons to Visit a Gynecologist

Gynecologist Fresno, CA

What is a gynecologist?

A gynecologist is a medical professional who specializes in gynecology. This branch of medicine is one that specifically focuses on functions and diseases that affect a woman’s reproductive system, which includes the uterus, ovaries, vagina, and breasts. A gynecologist will use a number of different types of diagnostic as well as therapeutic procedures in order to provide women with the reproductive care they want and/or need so they can live a happy and healthy life.

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a young woman should see a gynecologist for the first time between her 13th and 15th birthday.

What do gynecologists treat?

Gynecologists treat a variety of diseases and health problems that can get in the way of their reproduction system not functioning as it should. The fact that they are able to address both minor and major problems makes it important for women to build a strong relationship with their gynecologists, as they are a great resource of information. Two of the more common minor problems they treat include urinary tract infections and sexually transmitted diseases.

A list of some of the major things a gynecologist treats in their patients:

Routine check-ups

All women should make a conscious effort to keep a regular schedule of visits to their gynecologist. Seeing your doctor on a schedule will increase your overall health. They know what type of screenings, tests, and bloodwork to order. Having a close relationship with your gynecologist can be very beneficial throughout your lifetime.

Pregnancy

Pregnant women need to see their gynecologist throughout their pregnancy. Every visit is timed out to diagnose and monitor your unborn baby in different ways. All of them are very important to the health of your child.

Infertility

Infertility is very concerning to any woman who is trying to conceive a child. After trying on their own for a long period, a woman may need to seek the opinion of their gynecologist to be sure everything is okay with their reproductive system. Their doctor is the most knowledgeable in this situation and will be able to diagnose any infertility issues and find ways to overcome them.

Breast exams

A breast exam can save a woman’s life by detecting any lumps or abnormalities at the earliest stages. Having your gynecologist perform a routine breast exam will help detect issues that need treatment right away to prevent breast cancer from spreading.

Birth control

One of the most common reasons a woman may visit a gynecologist for the first time is that they need birth control. Birth control is beneficial for not just preventing pregnancy but can also help with acne and maintaining balanced hormones.

Abnormal pap smears

When a woman’s pap smear comes back as abnormal it is a cause for concern as it means that some of their cervical cells have changed. While it is possible that cancer is indeed present, an abnormal pap smear could also be caused by an infection, trichomoniasis, herpes or HPV, which all require their own special treatment.

Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a serious problem as it causes the lining of the uterus to grow outside of the uterus, which can lead to fertility problems. Two common treatment options used for endometriosis include taking prescribed medications or undergoing laparoscopic surgery.

Ovarian cancer

When ovarian cancer is detected, a gynecologist will first determine what stage the cancer is in so that they can decide whether chemotherapy, surgery, or a combination of both of these treatment options are necessary to remove cancer.

Urinary incontinence

Urinary incontinence can be caused by urinary tract infections, urinary tract abnormalities, and even neuromuscular disorders, which means women who are experiencing incontinence should not feel embarrassed. Incontinence can get in the way of a woman’s ability to live her life, making treatment options essential, i.e. taking prescribed medications, using special devices, undergoing surgical repair.

Sexual dysfunctions

Many sexual dysfunctions are related to physical barriers that can cause sex to be uncomfortable and even painful. A gynecologist will offer treatment depending on the type of sexual dysfunction, which can include the following treatment options — vaginal dilators, anesthetic creams, hormonal therapy, alternative therapy, and surgery.

Making regular gynecological appointments is important

Are you currently looking for a new gynecologist? If you want to be sure that you are in good reproductive health then it is necessary for you to make regular appointments with a gynecologist. If you happen to be experiencing any problems with your reproductive system then making an appointment as soon as possible for treatment is advised.

While a gynecologist does provide women with the regular reproductive system health care they need for good health, like pap smears, they also provide treatment for any functioning problems are diseases they may have that affect their reproductive system.
