What Does an OBGYN Do?

Your doctor may have referred you to an OBGYN, but do you know all the benefits this physician can provide? This doctor can give you critical care during your pregnancy and shortly after your baby is born. There is a lot of treatment, monitoring and other assistance involved during these nine months. An obstetrician/gynecologist can also help you with a variety of other issues. It is critical to choose the one you feel good about and know that has your well-being at heart.

The full range of care

In women’s health, a gynecologist has the training and knowledge to help women with reproductive concerns and other health issues. An obstetrician focuses on the woman’s pregnancy, labor, delivery and the immediate period after the baby’s birth. An OBGYN can take care of every wellness need a woman has. This means women, ages 18 through the end of life, can feel comfortable visiting with this doctor and getting counsel and help with a host of physical challenges.

Reproduction

As a woman enters the childbearing years, she may start thinking about getting pregnant. Some women find this easy to come by, while others may have conditions preventing it. This doctor can identify the reasons for this difficulty and may help with fertility treatments. On the other hand, some women may not wish to become pregnant. An obstetrician/gynecologist can guide the woman in choosing an appropriate birth control option.

Can perform procedures to promote health

This doctor is also equipped to handle various procedures. These can occur at any stage of the woman’s life and can address or identify many conditions. Some procedures must take place in the hospital, while the doctor can handle others in the office. Some are preventive, and others are corrective. Examples include:

  • Pap smear, which tests the woman for cervical cancer
  • Pelvic ultrasound, which can monitor the development of a fetus
  • STI tests
  • Hysterectomy
  • Cyst removal
  • Urinary issue treatment
  • Breast exams

Pregnancy care

One of the most important roles this doctor plays is caring for a woman during her pregnancy. This should start about eight weeks after the woman’s last period. At first, appointments will be about every month until about 32 weeks. After this, the woman should see her doctor every week or two. The doctor will keep a close eye on the woman’s health and the baby’s development. This physician will also delivery the baby.

Postnatal OBGYN visits

Once the baby is born, the doctor will examine the woman to make sure she is healing and does not have significant concerns or issues. Pregnancy and labor can be difficult on a woman’s emotions and body too. The doctor can provide counseling and support as well. This is an appropriate time for the woman to talk to the doctor about birth control options.

You are in good hands

An OBGYN is an important person in a woman’s life. You have different needs at different periods of your life. However, this doctor has the training to assist with many of the challenges you will face. Make an appointment and have peace of mind that you can achieve your wellness goals.
